What is A.I. aka Artificial Intelligence?

The term AI is around for over the years now and IT giants like Facebook, Google, etc. are extensively using this technique to enhance their capabilities to handle data, process it and get the information extract form it, which are being used in various other factors.

A.I. aka Artificial Intelligence

The idea of artificial intelligence was coined in year 1955 by John McCarthy. At this  time, they were completely unaware about what this might come out to be and what might be its uses to human beings.

Yet John McCarthy coined the concept of AI as following

“EVERY ASPECT OF LEARNING OR ANY OTHER FEATURE OF INTELLIGENCE CAN IN PRINCIPLE BE SO PRECISELY DESCRIBED THAT A MACHINE CAN BE MADE TO STIMULATE IT. AN ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE TO FIND HOW TO MAKE MACHINES USE LANGUAGE, FORM ABSTRACTIONS AND CONCEPTS, SOLVE KINDS OF PROBLEMS NOW RESERVED FOR HUMANS, AND IMPROVE THEMSELEVS.”

The original 7 aspects of A.I (1955)

1.       Simulating higher functions of the human brains.
2.       Programming a computer to use general language.
3.       Arranging hypothetical neurons in a manner so that they can form concepts.
4.       A way to determine and measure problem complexity.
5.       Self-improvement.
6.       Abstraction: defined as the quality of dealing with ideas rather than events.
7.       Randomness and creativity.

From all the above mentioned 7 concepts we have achieved some of them to a certain degree especially the self-improvement aspect of it.

 

How Facebook users are impacted using A.I?

1. Connecting Users to Content—The content that appears in user feeds in both the Facebook and Instagram applications is determined by a sophisticated algorithm that tries to better understand the user and what they’re interested in, and then tries to find content that matches those interests with the end goal of the algorithm being that users see a long-term value in interacting with the application. The infrastructure behind this is fascinating—servers in a given region serve content to users by day, then switch (as users fall asleep) to training on the experiences of the day to create new models ready to serve fresh content when users wake again. Facebook’s excellent infrastructure paper is a compelling read.

2. Moderating Posts—Another algorithm analyzes every post (text, images, or video) to ensure the content satisfies Facebook’s policy regarding pornography, hate speech, and violent content. The system has to look at the totality of the post, not just the text, not just the metadata, not just the image, but everything together, which can especially tricky when analyzing images overlaid with text. If the algorithm cannot decide on its own if a post violates the platform’s policy, the post is routed to one of 30,000 people dedicated to moderating the platform. The benefits of Facebook’s moderation systems reach outside the platform: Facebook routinely detects child sexual abuse material uploaded by users all over the world, and by reporting this material to the relevant authorities, plays a key role in the detection of offenses against children. A highlight of my own time at Intel was my part using AI to help the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to route Facebook’s reports to specialist police units around the globe.

3. Creating New Experiences—Facebook is investing in augmented reality (AR), powered by AI at its core, in order for people to seamlessly interact with a set of AR glasses and for the glasses to understand the world around the user, too. For example, someday you might be able to ask your AR glasses “Where did I leave my keys?” In order for that type of AI-interaction to be possible, Facebook has several local processing and privacy issues to solve. There are signs of progress already however, with Facebook’s Portal product running machine learning models locally for smoother and more user-friendly video calls.
